SC Standards: I-K.2.1. Identify ways that family and friends can help a person stay safe and avoid injury. I-K.2.2. Discuss ways to stay safe online. SC Standard: Standard 2: Explore hardware (i.e., physical components) and software of computing systems. The student will be able to: 2.CS.2.1 Describe the function of common computing devices and components (e.g., desktop computer, laptop computer, tablet, monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer). 2.CS.2.2 Recognize software that controls computing devices (e.g., use an application to draw on the screen; use software to write a story or control robots). The SCRATCH website was an easy way to learn the basics of digital programming. I think students inside the classroom would enjoy using this website to play informational games, and to learn how to make their own informational game. The only downside to this website was that most of the students in the classroom could not figure out how to upload their game. This could cause problems inside the classroom, because the students would not be able to upload their games. Overall, SCRATCH was fairly simple to navigate through, but I do believe that some students in a second grade setting (which is the grade standard I used) would need some help. My game that I created had an underwater theme. There were two crabs, a shark, a fish, an octopus, a stingray, and a starfish. I had the shark saying, "mhhhhhh" as he swam closer to the fish. All the other sea animals moved away as the shark ate the fish. The shark then swam off the screen. This was a very simple idea and I think it came together quiet well, though it took me longer than the class period to do. I enjoyed creating the game, but I feel as though it would take a lot of classroom time to finish it with second graders. ISTE Standard: 6a) Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication. In orderGame-Based Learning: Using games to enhance the learning outcome.
Gamification: Turns the classroom into a living, breathing game. I based my gaming for learning off of the widely-known game, "Candy Land." Growing up I loved the game, and enjoyed getting to cut through certain paths. My idea to bring this game to life is to design my entire classroom into a Candy Land. Considering I want to teach either second or third grade, I feel like the students would enjoy this game. The rules: 1) In order to move around the board, the students would have to earn a move. If the answer a question correctly, they would receive a free move pass. Which would allow them to move one time. 2) In order to get one of the special marks, (snowflake, gumball, lollipop) the student would need to complete an entire week without being called on. This would implement good behavior and provide the students with reward for their good behavior. 3) in order for the students to an extra move if they are to land on the black dot, then they would have to turn in all their homework assignments on time, or they can earn two moves (by answering questions correctly) to move to the next spot. The first one to reach the end would win the game and they would also win a special prize. I would give a different prize every time, that way the students would want to continue playing the game. If I was to give out the same prize every time then they would get tired of winning because they would not what they would win. - I may give extra recess one day. - I may let the student sit in my chair for a day. - I may give the student a free homework pass. - I may give the student candy. Overall, I fill like this would create a well- rounded classroom and would give the students competition. It would make the students want to complete more right answers, complete their homework, and be on their best behavior. Scholastic News is a great resource that kids can easily understand. The students in my class usually love working in Scholastic News. The only down fall on this app is that it does caot $3.30 per student.
YouTube is also a great resource that students can use. YouTube is student friendly, but you would have to pay close attention to each student to make sure they re staying on task because it is very easy for them to get off subject on this app. Readtheory.com is also a great way for students to read and analyze online articles. This is my favorite app to use, because it ask each students a series of questions after each article they read. After they read so many articles, they get to improve their scores. This app helps the students improve their analyzing skills the most. ISTE Standard: 6a) Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication. Reading Standard: RL: 11.1: Identify and analyze the author's purpose. To start the lesson, I have the students read different articles within the Scholastic News Article. The students would use the scholastic News app to read Edition 5/6 weekly leader. Then, each student would choose an article and write a prediction of why they think the author would write the article in the first place. Say the student chose to research the article about hurricanes. The would then be able to use YouTube to look up different videos that would help them better understand the concept. The students could also use the website readytheory.com (which is used in my classroom) to look up articles that they could compare the article they chose too. The students could then take pictures or screenshots of their articles and upload their articles into canvas. The would also attach their reflection about their article into canvas as well.
I have attached the ISTE Standards and the math standards in my lesson plan.
While completing this assignment with my partner. I learned a few valuable lessons. I learned about group work and how to work well with others. 1) I learned how to work well with other people that I had never worked with before. 2) I learned how to work with other people that are not majoring in the major that I am. I also learned about collaboration. 1) I learned how to collaborate and come up with one good idea, instead of just going with something that I was already familiar with. I also learned about NoteFIight ( which is the online source we used). 1) It is a website that allows students or teacher to create their own songs. 2) We completed 2 examples of our own work, which in my opinion was a little harder than I expected it to be. 3) We stated then that the children would compare their own music measures to fractions. 4) Noteflight was harder to navigate through than I thought it would be. I feel like older kids could complete this assignment, but I do not believe 3rd graders could without a lot of help. I enjoyed this lesson though, and really appreciate being able to bring two different majors and combine the two. The SC Department of Education Standard I used was: 4-3.1. Recall that Earth is one of many planets in the solar system that orbit the Sun. 42 Suggested Titles for South Carolina Science State Standard 4-3.1. This application would be very successful in my classroom. While planning for upcoming lessons, I could just attach any links I found. All of my links would be found in the same unit and it would easier to locate the links. This could also be used by the students. I (as the teacher) could upload multiple games and songs that the students could access on their computers. The students could also used this application when trying to research a specific topic. If they had to write a short research paper, then they could use this application to store all of their websites. This would also make the bibliography page a lot easier to create as well, because they would have all of the websites located in one spot. Overall, I think this a great website that both teachers and students can use to store data, communicate with each other, and share interesting facts with one another. Based on ISTE standard 7a) Quizlet provides an alternate way, and more exciting way, for the students to go online and participate in quizzes. This app, also allows students to use online sources and technology.
Based on ISTE standard 7b) Quizlet provides multiple different assessments that students can use to gain knowledge in certain core areas. The teachers can help the students create flashcards that the students can use as a formative assessment. The teacher can also create quizzes that each of the students can have a link to in order for them to complete their summative assessment, and test their overall knowledge. Based on ISTE 7c) Quizlet provides a lot of communication between the student and the teacher. It allows the students to receive immediate feedback from their quizzes, and it also lets the teacher know what the student missed and things they could work on. Quizlet does not allow any information to the parents though, and this could be difficult if the teacher is using the assessments as actual grades being documented. Own Reflection) The quizlet app is a free source that can be found on any computer, ipad, or tablet. It allows students to test their overall knowledge, and their knowledge on a day-to-day basis. I would use this in my classroom as a study tool, but I would not use it in my classroom as an assessment. The parents would not be able to see what their child could work on based on their grade, and I do not think that is fair. I would maybe used this the day before a test so the students can see how much more they need to study, and how much they already know. Overall, I think Quizlet is a great tool to help students study for upcoming test, but I do not know if it is the best assessment tool. The link for my Website is http://more.starfall.com/?
I believe that I can use this website in my own classroom in the future. This environment is very kid friendly. There is multiple games that the kids can play in order to test their own skills in certain subjects. There is also a section where the kids can watch videos on different vowel sounds. The "It's Fun to Read" is also a cool section on the website. The students could pick one of the seven clusters and read, the computer also can help them if they need it. With technology advancing more and more everyday, I believe that we need more technology inside the schools. Depending on where your school is located, you may not receive laptops and Ipads. This is an easy and resourceful way to introduce technology in the classroom. Most schools have a computers, therefore we should all be able to reach this website. I think this is a budget-friendly way of getting technology inside the classroom. Overall, I think this website would give the kids in my classroom a fun way of learning their everyday math and reading skills. |
